The Wisdom of a Weed

Over the weekend I was continuing our progress with the "kids garden" that we had begun the week or so before.  Sarah had faithfully been watering and keeping record of the sprouting of each plant as the days went by.  It was finally time to begin transplanting them to the garden.  So we set out with shovel in hand to do some weed removal and prepping of our soil before we added our tender plants.

Planting a Kid's Garden

I love to be outside in nature.  There is so much wisdom about life that lies within a garden that it''s a great time to discuss with kids the life lessons that exist there.  It's not my idea though - it's God's.  Apparently, He loves gardens too.  After all, Adam was placed in a garden and the first job of man was to be a gardener!  Jesus conversed with God in the garden on His final night of freedom and He was buried and resurrected in a garden.  Jesus describes Himself as the True Vine and refers to the Father as the Gardener.  He conveyed to us principles and stories using the analogy of gardens.  The parable of the sower, the vineyard owner, mustard seeds, vines, fruit,  chaff, wheat, fading leaves, mighty oaks, shoots spreading out, watered gardens, cedars, olive trees and I'm sure there are more - those are off the top of my head as I write.  God loves the beauty of nature - He created it and it brings Him glory.  So what better way for our kids to see Him, then through a garden?

The Mathematics of Classical Ballet

Have you ever thought about the mathematics of classical ballet?  Yes, these are the things I think about when I'm watching my daughter's ballet classes and performances.  I talk about them with her and I think it's awesome that she can see math in ballet now too!

So this weekend my daughter had her final recital for the year.  I couldn't help but ponder how much mathematics has gone into her training this year.  She dances at a very technical school.  I watched and was amazed at the abilities of these students.  The amount of mathematics that goes into the highest level of ballet is incredible when you really stop to think about it.
Let me share with you the math that I see in ballet.  First and foremost, let's talk about the classical music.  Music is very mathematical - arguably we all know that.  Classical ballet is steeped in fantastic classical music!  Dancers are often moving together across the stage in symmetrical patterns, and there are combinations of circles, lines, arcs, degrees and tangent circles...lots of patterns.  Ballet is geometry at its finest.  It requires spatial perception - it's experiencing time and space at their proportional relationship.  There are algorithms and numerics at the barre.  There is also reversing numbers and patterns.  Of course, there is lots of counting, adding, subtracting... Choreographers are terrific mathematicians too!

Next time you go to the ballet, see what math you can find as you watch!

Blessings and Struggles of Being a "Special Needs" Mom

On Mother's Day, I reflected on the blessings of being a Mom.  I can see so many blessings that have been added to my life since I first became a Mom.  I think of all the "special" Moms out there that have extraordinary tasks on their to do list each day because they are the Mom to a child with special needs.  I hope those Moms who have special needs children, had an extra special Mother's Day!

God Integrated Into Subjects

One of the things I love about teaching with a classical approach, is the integration of subjects.  As a Christian classical teacher more specifically, I love teaching about how God is integrated into every subject.  God being "integrated" into my child's subjects though, is not an accurate statement.  Rather, it is about how every subject shows us a different aspect of Gods creative work and mind.  God IS the subject and the names and categories we apply to His revealed knowledge of Himself are the disciplines we call history, geography, science, math, language arts and more - which really are just His methods of creating and communicating.

Math - Making a Wreath!

The girls wanted to learn how to make a wreath for Mother's day, I knew it would be an awesome opportunity to discuss some practical math concepts, so we set out to learn how to make a wreath...
Math in making a wreath:

  • Addition - cost of material selection
  • Subtraction -profit margin if you were to sell them
  • Skip counting the laid out pieces to be placed/glued
  • Counting as you figure out how many picks you need and how to lay them out on a wreath
  • Symmetry (horizontal, vertical and rotational) as you create a design pleasing to the eye

Finding Your Child's Place with Math

M.A.T.H.

I thought it was the unspoken, four letter word of homeschooling.  The request to get out the math book brought protests of "No...not maaath!!!" and internally, I also was thinking "No....not maaath!!!"  I wasn't sure what the problem was.  The script was all there - so I had to be teaching it right...right?  She was certainly more than smart enough to do math.  I was familiar with identifying learning disabilities and new that wasn't the issue either.  So why did it elicit such a response?  Was it me?  Was it the curriculum?  Was it homeschooling?  I was baffled and it began a year long quest to figure out the answer to the question - How do I teach Math and have my daughter (and myself) love it?

Bridging the Gap - Foundations to Challenge - Meet the Mom Series #2

Today is the second in the series - Meet the Moms!  Our special Mom we are speaking to today, is the Foundation's and Essentials Director for my local Classical Conversations® Community.  While she doesn't yet have any children in Challenge, she does work together closely with the Challenge Directors and has been around Classical Conversations for several years.  I believe she brings yet another perspective to the discussion regarding the gap in understanding for families in Foundations level, that are looking towards Challenge in the coming years.  So let's meet Dawn Hogan...

Foundations to Challenge - Bridging the Gap! Meet the Moms

I learned so much from the Directors that participated in the Interviews for Bridging the Gap Series, that I wanted to continue to learn more and widen my perspective, so I decided to go to some Challenge Moms and see what perspective they could share with us, that might illuminate this journey towards the Challenge years ahead.

So today meet the....

Wonderful Wednesday's EGGstravaganza!

I wanted to share our end of the year blow out -Wonderful Wednesday party!  I have to say that I don't think I have laughed that hard and much, in a very long time!  It was so much fun!  I wish everyone I knew could experience a group like this.  These women and children are incredible gifts to us and one another.  The exploration, experimentation, excitement and excellence that is within each of these kids and Mom's, is what makes life so fun homeschooling together!

Creating an Eye to See Him - Bunny Discovery!

Spring is here!  I think it's official now; as the calendar's first day of spring has passed, the trees have begun to bud, not to mention the dogwood and cherry trees already in full bloom.  We had our first sighting of all things spring on Saturday...baby bunnies!  While cleaning out the garden and getting it ready for planting, four precious baby cotton tail bunnies were found among last year's overgrowth.  They jumped out as the hoeing began and gave this young gentleman helping us, a good startle!

The girls were quick to run over and want to hold them and relocate them to safe territory away from the previous weed garden!  We couldn't find the "momma" rabbit, but reassured the girls, that she would find her babies in their new safe location.
